This second blog post covers the 2 week break period.
I set myself some tasks to complete over the uni break to make sure that I kept working on the research. My aim was to have completed the bulk of my research, as well as having completed my playthrough and analysis of Super Metroid. With this research completed, I hope to be able to review and process it all before I begin writing the draft of the essay. Over the two week period, I have fallen a little behind in my research. I was always wary of this, as I knew i’d have to work take some extra shifts at work to save some money for the rest of the year, but I did have some things in place to make it easier to get the work done. I have almost completed my Super Metroid playthrough, but I will need to compile all of my notes early next week, hopefully before class on wednesday. I have also started to write a section on my essay, which at this point will probably be the first section. I have completed a lot of research and compiled my rough thoughts in the beginning of my essay draft on the section outlining the influences of biology, physics and control systems. I feel it is important to talk about these things early on in the essay, as understanding these elements will make it easier for the reader to understand where I am coming from later on in the essay. This section is the fundamentals of my essay. In terms of the artifact, I am feeling apprehensive. At this point, I still have just over three weeks to complete the written draft, but I would like to have a rough prototype by the end of this period as well to show in my wid-way presentation. At the least, I would like at least to have a plan of sorts, outlining what I hope to make. I’m sure at this point that it will be a section or two of the game, recreated with manipulated feedback loops, to see what the outcome on player interaction is, and how the flow of the game is altered. I have a few ideas for which sections of the game I will use. One would be a very simplified version of the Crocomire boss fight. The boss fight uses a tug of war type mechanic that I could replicate reasonably effectively. There are also a few things I could easily tweak in order to change the way the loops work in this encounter, such as what items are available. Before I go much further with the essay, and certainly before i start making my prototype, I want to get all my research notes in order, and categorise everything. This way, when I get around to the actual writing/making parts of the assignment, everything will be laid out in a legible manner that should be easier to process.

Question: How to define realism in worldbuilding through player sensation? After completing my research proposal for my chosen topic, I will be demonstrating certain elements from my references to add in addition to my world. These objects will directly correlate towards my chosen question. I plan to model low poly block outs of trees, rocks, shrubs and other small things that will populate my scene. I will then work on shaders that will neatly interpolate current with additional texture maps one after the other based on distance. I have planned and setup a basic scene in which a player can move around while lighting and textures lerp onto the objects using an alpha map. When compiling all my research into the asset I will then be able to move forward with more research on other elements, but for now, objects and textures are the main goal to achieve by the end of this week. Question: How do items, weapons and powerups incentivise players to progress through the lens of positive and negative feedback loops in the metroidvania genre.
After completing the research proposal for my research topic, I started playing Super Metroid. I'm going to play through the game and take notes, and through this process I hope to find a few instances or sections within the game that would be suitable for my artifact. I will be purchasing a little notebook to use as a dedicated play journal, and i'll also be collating screenshots for later use. These notes and screenshots will be organised into sections of the game, and I'm going to try and incorporate a map of sorts into my research plan so that upon looking back at my notes, i'll know exactly where a certain event happened in the game. Once a week I will also be putting a few hours into some research. A lot of my listed sources in my proposal have sources of their own that I intend to follow up on. Over the course of the next few weeks I'm going to read a lot varied material and produce a lot of notes. These will also be arranged into similar sections as my game journal. By week nine, I hope to have finished the game, and hope to have a really strong library of notes and research to build my essay with. At the end of each week, I will collate my findings and try to process and organise them into a piece of writing. This will be the embryonic stage of my essay, and over time i'm hoping that this will grow naturally into the bulk of the essay. By week nine I hope to begin my artifact. If I begin my artifact late, I will have to rethink the parameters of the artifact and perhaps adjust it. |
